Deducting office in home expenses is a great way to gain a benefit out of expenses you incur anyway. If your primary place of business is your home, or an area of your home is used exclusively for earning business income or meeting customers, you may be eligible to deduct a portion of your home expenses (i.e. heat, power, rent, etc.) paid during the year.
The greatest advantage of these business or employment deductions is that you do not have to spend additional money to create the expenses; you will have already spent the money maintaining your dwelling.
If you use more than 25% of the square footage of your home for business purposes, take photos of the work areas in the event CCRA ever questions the reasonableness of your allocation.
